Gaby Deslys (born September 4, 1881 in Marseille as Gabrielle Claire , † February 11, 1920 in Montrouge ) was a French revue dancer , singer and actress .

Life

Gabrielle Caire received her vocal training at the Conservatory in Marseille . In the Folies Bergere in Paris in 1898 she started her career as a singer. She kicked u. a. at the Théâtre Capucies, Mathurins and Olympia. As a well-known singer, she left Paris in 1906 and went to London . In the burlesque The New Aladdin , she appeared on September 29, 1906 at the Gaiety Theater, which earned her the nickname The Charm of Paris . A liaison with King Manuel of Portugal caused a stir in the press as it was linked to his abdication in 1910 and political unrest.

Her now amorous fame preceded her to New York and became the subject of Burlesque Gaby . She made her New York debut in 1911, where she appeared in two performances at the Winter Garden Theater. In early 1912, Gaby returned to Paris with her future partner Harry Pilcer . Pilcer created the dance Gaby Glide for her . She also brought fashion dances to France from the USA, such as B. the grizzly or Siberian . She also showed these dances in her performances throughout Europe, such as B. at the Paris Théâtre Femina, the Vienna Apollon Theater and the London Palace Theater. Renewed appearances took her back to New York in 1914. She appeared in the performances Honeymoon Express, The Belle of Bond Street, Rosy Rapture, Stop! Look! Listen! and 5064 Gerrard .

Together with Harry Pilcer she worked in the films The Triumph (1915) and Infatuation (1918) by Louis Mercanton. In the Casino de Paris both danced in 1917 in the equipment revue Laissez-le-tomber !, the so-called ladder revue. Both were the most celebrated dance couple in the Music Halls , followed by Maurice Chevalier and Mistinguett , who replaced the couple the following year. Gaby Deslys established a new style with her costumes and ostrich feathers, some of which were designed by Erté . She brought the first jazz band ( Alexander's Ragtime Band ) to Paris .

She was last seen in 1919 at the Théâtre Femina in a revue by Bénédicte Rasimi . She died of a laryngitis on February 11, 1920 in Montrouge . She bequeathed her fortune to the city of Marseille for charity.
