Harvey Bartlett Gaul

Harvey Bartlett Gaul (born April 11, 1881 in New York City , † December 1, 1945 in Pittsburgh / Pennsylvania ) was an American composer and organist.

Gaul began his musical education with George LeJeune and Dudley Buck and continued it in Great Britain with Alfred R. Gaul and Philip Ames and in France with Alexandre Guilmant , Charles-Marie Widor and Vincent d'Indy .

From 1899 to 1901 Gaul was second organist at St. John's Chapel in New York, from 1901 to 1909 organist and choirmaster at Emmanuel Church in Cleveland. During this time he also worked as a music critic for the Cleveland News .

In 1910 he received the post of organist and choir director at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh, which he held until his death. He also worked here as a writer and music critic for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and conductor of the Pittsburgh Civic String Orchestra and the Savoyard Opera Company . He has also taught music at the University of Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Institute of Technology .

In 1920 he became music director of the newly founded radio station KADA , and in the following year he worked for The Musical Forecast magazine . During his time in Pittsburgh, he collected anecdotes and reports about the city-raised songwriter Stephen Foster , which Fletcher Hodges published after his death in the Western Pennsylvania Historical Magazine under the title The Minstrel of the Alleghenies .

Gaul was a prolific composer. Of his more than 500 works, in addition to some church music works (especially Chanson du Matin and Chanson du Soir , 1906; Lenten Meditation , 1909; Christmas Pipes of County Clare , 1926; Ancient Hebrew Prayer of Thanksgiving , 1935; Moravian Morning Star , 1941; Easter Procession of the Moravian Brethren , 1945), especially his cantata I Hear America Singing, based on texts by Walt Whitman , which he published in various choral ensembles, is known. The Harvey Gaul Composition Competition was initiated in his memory, sponsored by the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1960 and the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble in 1980 .
