Johann Christian Lobe (born May 30, 1797 in Weimar ; † July 27, 1881 in Leipzig ) was a German composer and music theorist .

Life

Lobe grew up in Weimar and learned to play the violin autodidactically . From 1804 to 1811 he attended the Wilhelm-Ernst-Gymnasium Weimar . From 1810 he played the violin at a church in Weimar and in 1821 completed his first composition, the opera Wittekind . In the following years Lobe composed further operas, including a. The Flibustier (1830) and The Princess of Granada (1833) as well as some orchestral pieces. In 1842 he was appointed professor in Weimar, but in 1846 he moved to Leipzig, where he worked as a music critic and composition teacher. His best known writing is the textbook of musical composition , which was written between 1850 and 1867.
