- February: The newly built Springer Opera House in Columbus , Georgia opens with an amateur concert by members of the Trinity Episcopal Church .

- February 10 : The world premiere of the operetta Indigo and the 40 Robbers by Johann Strauss (son) takes place at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
- April 11th : The world premiere of the opera Mirjam by August Klughardt takes place in Weimar.
- December 24th : The opera Aida by Giuseppe Verdi with the libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni , based on a scenario by Auguste Mariette , is premiered at the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo more than a year late . The reason for the delay is that the costumes and props were included in the Prussian siege of Paris in the Franco-Prussian War .

- June 17th : The song Die Wacht am Rhein by Carl Wilhelm and Max Schneckenburger is of central importance at the musical victory celebration in the Berlin Court Opera . It will be performed at the end of the celebration after the Kaiser Wilhelm March by the composer Ingeborg Bronsart von Schellendorf and in the German Empire, in addition to Heil dir in the wreath, has the function of an unofficial national anthem .
