Paul Richard Gläser (born March 22, 1871 in Untermarxgrün in Vogtland , † April 4, 1937 in Großenhain ) was a German church musician , composer and church music director .

Life

Paul Gläser was born as the son of the Erlbach cantor Karl Ernst Gläser (1849–1923) and trained on the organ from an early age. For financial reasons he first learned to be a teacher before studying music at the Leipzig Conservatory , including composition with Carl Reinecke . In 1901, glasses was employed as the cantor of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Marienkirche in Großenhain . He continued to work as the conductor of the “Liedertafel” and the Grossenhain men's choir. He also worked as the federal choir master of the "Meißner Land" singing association. Because of his services, Paul glasses was awarded the title of church music director in 1924.

As a composer, Gläser created numerous secular and sacred works. The most important work is the oratorio "Jesus" in a prelude and two parts for solos, choir and orchestra (first performance in 1917 in Großenhain). Five operas (including “Das Kirchlein am See”), two operettas, a symphony in C minor and numerous songs are part of his work, along with other choral and orchestral works.

In 1999 the city of Großenhain showed an exhibition about the life and work of the musician.
