Gustav Bermel (born August 11, 1927 in Cologne-Ehrenfeld ; † November 10, 1944 in Cologne-Ehrenfeld) was a young German deserter from a Schanz deployment on the Siegfried Line and a victim of Nazi arbitrariness .

Life

Bermel grew up in Cologne's Ehrenfeld district and began an apprenticeship as a businessman after attending primary school . He was called up for the Reich Labor Service and was used for fortification work on the Siegfried Line. From there he fled home and joined the " Ehrenfeld group ". The Gestapo but was able to determine his stay, he led on 4 October 1944 the apartment of his parents and took him into custody . On November 10, 1944, he and twelve other people (five young people and seven adults) were brought from the Brauweiler remand prison to Cologne-Ehrenfeld, where they were hanged in Hüttenstrasse at the train station without a court judgment . Around 400 onlookers had gathered for this.

In the permanent exhibition opened in 2010 at the Brauweiler Memorial , Bermel was identified using a photo.

Honors

  • Since November 9, 2003 a plaque commemorates the hanged edelweiss pirates in Ehrenfeld . The plaque is attached to the arches of the railway underpass in Schönsteinstrasse , near Venloer Strasse - this is where the execution took place.
