The new Vienna Court Opera
- May 25 : The “New House” of the Vienna Court Opera opens with a performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth . The first director is Franz von Dingelstedt .
World premieres
ballet
- Don Quixote , a ballet by the choreographer Marius Petipa to the music of Léon Minkus , will be premiered at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. The libretto is based on the novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes .
Instrumental music
- April 3 : The Piano Concerto by Edvard Grieg , the only perfect concert of the Norwegian composer, has in Copenhagen's premiere .
- July 6th : The Egyptian March , composed by Johann Strauss Sohn on the occasion of the upcoming opening of the Suez Canal , is performed for the first time on the composer's trip to Russia.
- November 13th : The first performance of the Messa per Rossini on the first anniversary of Gioachino Rossini's death , a joint composition by thirteen Italian composers, does not take place, after which the work is forgotten for more than 100 years.
- The 3rd piano concerto by Camille Saint-Saëns premiered in the Gewandhaus in Leipzig and failed the audience.
- Johann Strauss (son) : The composer brought out the following works in 1869: Wein, Weib und Gesang (Waltz) op 333; King's Songs (Waltz) op 334; Fata Morgana (Polka Mazur) op 330; Éljen a Magyar! (Polka) op 332; Im Krapfenwald'l (Polka) op 336; Von der Börse (Polka) op 337; Louischen (Polka) op 339; Egyptian March op 335 and the Slovianka Quadrille op 338.
Opera
- February 26th : The opera William Ratcliff by César Cui is premiered at the Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg
- February 27th : The new version of Giuseppe Verdi's opera La forza del destino with the libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni is performed for the first time at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano . The first version had its world premiere on November 10, 1862 .
- September 22nd : The opera Das Rheingold by Richard Wagner is premiered under the direction of Franz Wüllner against the will of the composer at the Royal Court and National Theater in Munich.
- 29 October : More than 20 years after the composer's death, Gaetano Donizetti's opera Gabriella di Vergy, composed in 1829, is premiered at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
- 11 December : The world premiere of the opera Paria by Stanisław Moniuszko based on a libretto by Jan Chęciński based on the tragedy Le Paria by Casimir Delavigne takes place at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw. Despite positive criticism from the Warschauer Kurier, Paria was dropped from the opera repertoire after six more performances.

- January 16 : The world premiere of the operetta L'Ecossais de Chatou by Léo Delibes takes place at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris.
- July 31st : The opera-bouffe La princesse de Trébizonde by Jacques Offenbach is premiered at the Theater Baden-Baden . Offenbach's own ensemble, the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens Paris, is on the stage, while Offenbach himself is at the conductor's desk.
requiem
- February 18 : The final version of A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms has its world premiere in the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. On January 3rd, however , there was a private performance of the piano reduction version with a small choir and soloists in Dessau, as Brahms learned from his friend Adolf Schubring.
Others
- May 2nd : A musical entertainment establishment opens in Paris under the name Folies Trévise . After its beginnings as Folies Bergère, it developed into an erotic variety theater and cabaret .
- Summer: The first Estonian song festival is held in Tartu on the initiative of the publicist Johann Voldemar Jannsen . The first day is devoted to sacred songs, the second to secular ones. However, there are only two Estonian songs in the program: Mu isamaa on minu arm and Surmani , composed by Aleksander Kunileid and written by Lydia Koidula .
- Richard Wagner publishes the anti-Semitic essay Das Judenthum in der Musik , written by him in 1850, as a brochure.
