August Halm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

August Halm (born October 26, 1869 in Großaltdorf in Württemberg; † February 1, 1929 in Saalfeld / Saale in Thuringia ) was a German composer , theologian , music teacher and painter .

Life

August Halm was the third son of Hermann Friedrich Halm and Charlotte Auguste (née Kulmbach). At that time the father was a pastor in Großaltdorf. He combined his theology studies at the University of Tübingen with a study of composition. The academic music director Emil Kauffmann was regarded as a teacher and sponsor . After the turn of the century he met Hermann Lietz , Martin Luserke , Gustav Wyneken and Paul Geheeb . From 1906 to 1910 and from 1920 to 1929 he worked at the Free School Community of Wickersdorf near Saalfeld .

Halm was considered the most important music educator and spokesman for the “musical youth movement”. As a composer he remained behind his role model Anton Bruckner in his endeavor to combine the compositional techniques of the fugue and the sonata . However, he made a name for himself as a music esthetician as well as a music writer. His writings are characterized by a direct, illuminating and clear language.
