- June 10 : Wagner's Tristan und Isolde is premiered with triumphant success under the direction of Hans von Bülow at the Royal Court and National Theater in Munich . Malvina Schnorr von Carolsfeld sings Isolde . The singer of Tristan , Malvina's husband Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld , dies only a few days later at the age of only 29, which means that Tristan's role is still considered "murderous" to this day. Musically, Wagner's innovations, especially in the area of harmony, such as the Tristan chord , continue to have an effect right through to the last phase of romantic music.
- June 30th : The operetta The beautiful Galathée by Franz von Suppè based on the libretto by Leonhard Kohl von Kohlenegg has its world premiere at the Meysels Theater in Berlin. The Austrian premiere will take place on September 9th at the Carltheater in Vienna. The order for the play comes from the Viennese impresario Karl Treumann that after the success of Jacques Offenbach's operetta La Belle Hélène in the previous year the recipe "mythological material in comic update with female star" on the Viennese operetta is trying to transfer. The text is an adaptation of Victor Massé's Opéra-comique Galathée from 1852 . According to the customs of the time, the servant Ganymede is designed as a trouser role and is portrayed in Vienna by the famous comedian Anna Grobecker . The piquancy that she has to sing a kiss duet with Galathee contributes significantly to the success of the piece.
- September 28th : The opera Straszny Dwór (The Haunted Castle) by Stanisław Moniuszko is premiered at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw. After a total of three performances, it was banned by the tsarist censors because of the Polish patriotic undertones and was no longer performed until 1914 .

- December 17 : The Symphony in B minor ( The Unfinished ) by Franz Schubert is premiered 37 years after the composer's death in the great Redoutensaal of the Vienna Hofburg . Johann von Herbeck found the forgotten score with Schubert's friend Anselm Hüttenbrenner .
