Johann Fürst (born April 17, 1825 in Vienna ; † October 19, 1882 there ) was an Austrian folk singer , actor and theater director.

Life

The beginnings as a folk singer

Johann Fürst was raised in a foundling house and first came as an apprentice to a butcher, then to the button turner Seidl, the father of the popular singer Wenzel Seidl (1842–1921). His musical talent emerged early on - according to a legend circulated by Hugo Paul, he was discovered when he was singing the yodel of a female singer in a suburban pub behind a hedge without errors. Fürst already appeared as a folk singer in the suburbs at the age of 16 and founded his own troupe in 1856, with which he also had success and became wealthy in society.

The theater director

In mid-1861 he bought the last vacant monkey theater in Wiener Wurstelprater (Fireworks Allee, today: Exhibition Street ). He ran it from April 21, 1862, initially as a singspielhalle (also: Liederspielhalle ; later, after receiving the theater license, as Fürst's Volkstheater in the Imperial and Royal Prater , then Fürst-Theater ).

The site previously belonged to the menagerie owner and animal dealer Heinrich Schreyer , who opened there on April 25, 1847, after which it was managed by Carl Orbán and Laurent Casanova (sometimes also: Louis Casanova).

Theater in the Josefstadt

In addition to his ownership of the summer the seasonal music hall leased Prince the dilapidated theater in Josefstadt , and, after renovation, it reopened on October 7, 1865 the local Posse Old and New Vienna by Karl Bayer , however, put bitter experiences because of a series already May 1, 1866 the management down.

Together with Josef Matras , Fürst established his Prater stage in 1862/63 as a center of classical Viennese folk singing. In July 1870, Fürst rented the premises of the Pest Winter Orpheum for five years in order to give performances with his company as Fürst's Vaudeville Theater during the winter season.

With the resignation of Heinrich Börnstein and Karl Bukovics (1835–1888) on July 19, 1871, Fürst again took over the management of the Josefstadt theater as a tenant (until 1877).

Theater principal and author

Fürst made a name for himself as the author of couplets, folk plays and antics, especially as a house poet for his theater. The folk play A Viennese folk singer had its premiere on September 16, 1859 in the Theater an der Wien ; Among his most famous couplets are On Monday, start all over again , Well, just ka water net, well, well , des mag i net and the duet Allerweil fidel .

You will never know my name

A famous oxymoron from one of his antics, possibly not invented by him, became the proverbial: "You will never know my name - I am the Emperor Josef." This referred to the theatrical incognito of Emperor Joseph II , who traveled to France as a "Count of Falkenstein". In a rhythmically improved form, Fritz von Herzmanovsky-Orlando uses the sentence at the end of his piece " Emperor Joseph and the Railwayman's Daughter ": "But you should never know my name - I trust everyone knows him." Jura Soyfer transposes the sentence in his satire "The most loyal citizen of Baghdad" into the Orient: "But you should never know my name! I am the Caliph Harun al Radschid!"
