Johann Nepomuk Kaňka (also: Jan Kaňka ; born November 10, 1772 in Prague ; † April 5, 1865 ibid) was a Bohemian lawyer and composer .

Life

He is the son of Johann Nepomuk Kaňka of the same name . After studying law, he received his doctorate in 1794. jur. and in 1796 became state advocate. From 1798 he worked in the financial service. In 1812 he was electoral Hessian and royal Saxon councilor. From 1815 he was dean of the law faculty and 1828-1830 rector of Prague University. He also wrote legal treatises.

Kaňka, who had known Beethoven since 1796 , made great contributions to Prague's musical life. In 1840 he founded the local Cecilia Society; He was also a member of the Society for Church Music and the Sophien Academy as well as the director of the Conservatory.

As a composer he wrote chamber music , cantatas and songs. His compositions were influenced by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . His musical legacy is in the Prague National Museum .
