Instrumental music
- January 5th : The second version of Max Bruch's 1st Violin Concerto is premiered in Bremen under the direction of Carl Martin Reinthaler with Joseph Joachim as soloist . Another performance will take place at the Lower Rhine Music Festival at Whitsun in Cologne. The expressive melody, the beauty of the sound and the clear structure of the work are the reasons for its continued popularity.
- January 21st : The waltz Spheres Sounds by Johann Strauss (son) is premiered in the Sofiensaal in Vienna on the occasion of a medicine ball .
- February 3 : The 1st Symphony by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky , composed in 1866 , is performed in full for the first time under the direction of Nikolai Rubinstein and is well received.
- April 10 : The first version of A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms is successfully premiered in Bremen Cathedral under the direction of the composer after it has been rehearsed by the Bremen cathedral music director Carl Martin Reinthaler . The fifth movement still missing at this concert is only inserted afterwards.
- May 9 : Anton Bruckner conducts the world premiere of his 1st symphony ( WAB 101) in the Altes Dom in Linz . The performance, which was positively reviewed by Eduard Hanslick , turned out to be a respectable success, but could not do anything for the composer's later career. This is probably one of the reasons for Bruckner's move to Vienna in the same year.
- The pianist and conductor Anton Grigorjewitsch Rubinstein plans to give a concert as a conductor in Paris in May and asks his friend Camille Saint-Saëns to compose a work for it. He then composed his 2nd piano concerto in just 17 days . The premiere of the piano concerto on May 13th , in which the composer played the piano part, was a failure due to the short preparation time. Among the audience, however, was Franz Liszt , who recognized the compositional qualities of the work and encouraged Saint-Saëns to continue performing the work, which soon enjoyed growing popularity.
- June 19 : The dance waltz “ Tales from the Vienna Woods ” by Johann Strauss (son) is premiered in the kk Volksgarten by the Strauss Chapel under the direction of the composer.
- July 26 : In Sondershausen is the first symphony by Max Bruch premiered. Further performances within Germany will follow. The press did not develop any enthusiasm, but responded with praise to the symphony. The symphony is accused of orienting itself too clearly towards Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy .
- In addition to the two waltzes listed above, the composer Johann Strauss (son) also released the following works in 1868: Die Publicisten (Waltz) op. 321; City and Country (Polka) op 322; One heart, one sense (Polka) op 323; Under thunder and lightning (Schnellpolka) op 324; Free balls (Polka) op 326; Sängerslust-Polka and Le premier jour de bonheur (Quadrille) op 327.

- May 16 : The world premiere of the opera Dalibor by Bedřich Smetana with the libretto by Josef Wenzig takes place on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of the National Theater at the České Prozatímní Divadlo ( Interim Theater ) in Prague. The premiere was well received, but in the following weeks Smetana was accused by Czech-national circles of "Germanizing" the music by introducing the leitmotif .
