Georg Scherer

Georg Scherer (born March 16, 1824 (Scherer himself stated his year of birth as 1828) in Dennenlohe , today Unterschwaningen , district of Ansbach ; † September 20, 1909 in Eglfing , Upper Bavaria ) was a German writer and editor of folk songs, fables, sayings and Puzzle.

life and work

Georg Scherer studied philosophy and philology in Munich. He received his doctorate in 1857 in Tübingen as Dr. phil. and completed his habilitation in literature and art history at the Stuttgart Polytechnic in 1864 . In 1875 he became professor and librarian at the Royal Art School there . He was a highly valued poet and collector during his lifetime. Its main importance lies in folk song research and the publication of important collections and illustrated children's books. In 1849 he edited the collection of old and new children's songs for the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig with the help of artists such as Moritz von Schwind , Ludwig Richter , Wilhelm von Kaulbach and Franz von Pocci . He exchanged letters with Eduard Mörike and Theodor Storm . From 1881 he lived as a freelance writer in Munich. In old age he fell ill with dementia and died in 1909 in the Eglfing insane asylum near Munich.
