The list of place names of the colonial times in Africa contains place names of the colonial times that can be sorted according to today's state names, which were renamed after the independence of the respective state, as well as their current names. Most of the renaming was done with the intention of demonstrating independence and self-confidence in their own African culture and removing symbols from the colonial era. The best-known examples of this policy are the attempt to “ Zairize ” the Democratic Republic of the Congo under Mobutu Sese Seko in the 1970s or the systematic renaming of place names after Zimbabwean independence under Robert Mugabe . In some cases, the renaming only corrected an actual or alleged incorrect transmission of traditional place names from the colonial era. For example, the Zimbabwean “Gwelo” became “ Gweru ” after independence . In the special case of South Africa, it was, in a broader sense, the removal of symbols of apartheid .
Place names obviously originating from European languages that have not been renamed after independence are not included.
