Bulembu (formerly Havelock ) is a place in Swaziland . It is in the Hhohho region ; in 1997 it had 2,443 inhabitants.

geography

The place is located on the western edge of the country around 1228 meters above sea level in the Highveld , on the southern slope of Emlembe , which is Swaziland's highest mountain at 1862 meters above sea level.

history

Around 1882 gold and asbestos were found in the area of ​​today's city . The place was subsequently founded under the name Havelock . In 1939 the Bulembu – Barberton material ropeway was built to transport asbestos from the Havelock mine to Barberton in South Africa and coke for the coal-fired power station in Bulembu. In 2001 the asbestos mine was closed and the cable car shut down. The power plant also ceased operations. In 2006, the non-profit organization Bulembu Ministries Swaziland , which is largely funded by Canadians, took over the entire town and has been responsible for its development ever since. Among other things, the Bulembu Museum was set up with departments on the geology of the region and the mining history of the place.

Economy and Transport

The city is on the MR20 which runs from Piggs Peak via Bulembu to the South African border . Beyond the Bulembu / Josefsdal border crossing, the R40 leads to Barberton, among other places.

In the 1980s, the Bulembu Young Aces FC were among the most successful football teams in Swaziland.
