Chivhu , formerly Enkeldoorn and a stronghold of the Boers , is a city with 5,000 inhabitants at 1,500 m altitude 142 km south of Harare in Zimbabwe in the Mashonaland East province .

Chivhu is the abbreviation of "Chivundhara", which means "old man who is near the earth" in Shona . There was probably a chieftain in Chivhu who was short. The city is at a junction of Zimbabwe's road system and has branches towards Masvingo , Gweru , Harare and Chipinge . Chivhu has elementary and secondary schools (St. Francis Of Assisi High School) as well as a hospital, which, however, is mostly only run by nurses who, like in the rest of Zimbabwe, mainly have to attend to AIDS , cholera and malaria . Ngezi Park is located near Chivhu .
