Modimolle (formerly Nylstroom ) is a town at the southern end of the Waterberg massif in Limpopo Province in South Africa . In 2011 it had 12,185 inhabitants. It is located in the municipality of Modimolle-Mookgophong , whose administrative seat it is.

The city is located about 135 kilometers north of Pretoria . The main sources of income are agriculture , livestock and tourism .

history

In the 1860s Boer settlers ( Voortrekker ) founded the city here in search of the Holy Land . Assuming the river to be the Nile , they named the city Nylstroom. In 1889 a church was built, which today is the oldest surviving church building between the Sahara and Pretoria. In 1898 Modimolle was connected to the railway network from Pretoria.

During the Second Boer War , the church was used as a hospital . The British built a concentration camp for women and children here during the Boer Wars, 544 of whom died.

  • The town hall , Town Hall , was built after 65 years of the establishment of the village and built by Ludwig Field with funds from an immigrant from Norway . The building was designed in the Cape Dutch Style and completed in 1931. Today it is the core of the regional administrative complex. Nearby is a memorial ( Concentration Camp Memorial ) that commemorates the women and children who perished in the concentration camps of the Second Boer War . There is also a monument with the bust of the former Boer general CF Beyers from the former Waterberg Command .
  • Strijdom House and Strijdom Statue , the home of the later Prime Minister Johannes Gerhardus Strijdom reminds of his earlier work in this region.
  • The train station , Nylstroom Station and a historic steam locomotive called The Nylstromer
  • The cemetery , Concentration Camp Graveyard , the former concentration camp from the Boer Wars commemorates 544 women and children buried here. Not far from the cemetery is a memorial, the MOTH Memorial , to commemorate the Boer soldiers who fell from these wars.
  • Wit Kerk of the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk of South Africa, a Cape Gothic style building completed in 1899 .
  • Hervormde Kerk , a building inaugurated in 1922 to replace its predecessor. The church is used by two parishes.
  • Gereformeerde Kerk from 1929 based on a design by Gerhard Moerdijk , the creator of the Voortrekker monument in Pretoria .
  • The horse mail building , Horse Rail , is a reminder of the region's earlier transport history.
  • One of the oldest preserved buildings in the place is the pharmacy, Bakkers Pharmacy , with a small historical presentation.
