Marondera (until 1982 Marandellas ) is 73 km south of Harare on the road and railroad to Mutare in the province of Mashonaland East in Zimbabwe . Marondera is the capital of the province and, at 1,640 meters above sea level, is the highest city in Zimbabwe.

Marondera was founded in 1890 as a rest house. The place was first called Marandellas, after the local Barozwi chief over 100 years ago.

The largest river in the country, the Save , has its source here . The city was one of the first settlements in the country to be founded by whites, is surrounded by fields, mostly with corn, tobacco and wine, some rubber plantations and is an agricultural city.

Marondera has 61,998 inhabitants (2012 census), is home to some small industries, elementary and secondary schools, two colleges and a hospital. The Women's University in Africa was founded here in 2002 , the aim of which is to increase the proportion of women among scientists. The founding chancellor was Lydia Makhubu .

The city has telephone, electricity, and water supplies, albeit not continuously, although there are two reservoirs near the city.
