Bridge over the Save in Mozambique |
The Save (pronounced: Sa'wie) is one of the larger rivers in Zimbabwe and Mozambique . It is about 740 km long and flows almost entirely through fertile land. Since it has water all year round, it has repeatedly been the basis of planning projects, the largest of which is the Save Limpopo project. This should irrigate 100,000 hectares of land, especially for sugar cane plantations.
course
The Sava rises about 30 km west of Hwedza in the province of Ostmaschonaland and flows through the highlands (highveld). He picks up the water from the Odizi and then rushes over the falls of Chivirira (Shona for 'cooking place'). It then flows through the province of Manicaland , past the mountains of Chimanimani , and forms the border with the province of Masvingo from the Birchenough Bridge , behind which it absorbs the waters of the Devuli . It flows in a south-southeast direction. On the border with Mozambique, it joins the Runde in Gonarezhou National Park and then flows on as the Rio Save. From there it bends to the east and forms the border between the two states for about 10 km. It finally flows into the Indian Ocean at Mambone about 100 km south of Beira on the Mozambique Strait .
