Chinhoyi Caves

Chinhoyi , named after a Shona chief , is the capital of Mashonaland West Province in Zimbabwe . It has 77,929 inhabitants (2012 census) and is located on the western edge of the intensively used farmland near Harare . Chinhoyi is 1,200 meters above sea level on the Harare – Lions Den railway line and has a runway for domestic flights.

Tourist attractions are the Chinhoyi Caves , stalactite caves with a lake 50 m below, the sleeping pool 80 to 90 m deep, depending on the rainfall. Around the year 1830, the nomadic A should ngoni strain surprised the original inhabitants here and have plunged into the lake, then the Shona domain name Chirorodziva received: "See the Fallen". The lake has a constant temperature of 22 degrees, so geologists assume that this lake is only the small part of an underground water reservoir. For a long time, these caves served the residents of the area as storage facilities. Some of the clay pots found by experts date back to AD 650. In 1957 the caves were declared a national monument; they are publicly available.
