Mashonaland West (German Westmaschonaland ) is a province of Zimbabwe . It has a total area of 57,441 km² and 1.5 million inhabitants (2012). Their capital is Chinhoyi .
West Mashonaland is a contrasting area. The northern part with the steep Zambezi slope is not very fertile, sparsely unpopulated and partially designated as a national park. Larger places in the northern part are Kariba and Karoi . There is also the Kariba dam .
The southern part is fertile, densely populated, intensively used agriculturally and with many small towns ( Kadoma , Chinhoyi , Norton , Chegutu , Muzvezve ).
