Midlands is one of three provinces in Zimbabwe that do not have a share of the state's external border (along with Bulawayo Province and Harare Province ).

Its area covers 49,166 km² and a population of around 1.6 million (2012). The capital of the province is Gweru , the third largest city in the country. As the central province of Zimbabwe, the population here is made up of numerous ethnic groups: Shona , Ndebele , Tswana , Suthu and Chewa .

The most productive part of the ore-rich Great Dyke runs through the Midlands . Kwekwe is probably the city with the richest mining, manufacturing and chemical industries. The gold production here is the highest in the country. Away from the Great Dyke, agriculture predominates, with cotton cultivation dominating in the two rural Gokwe districts.
