Kwekwe , also Que Que or Hwe Hwe , was founded in 1900, according to other sources in 1890, is located in the Midlands province and is now the center of gold mining and, like its direct neighboring town Redcliff, one of the centers of the iron and steel industry in Zimbabwe . These metals were extracted there long before the colonization in the so-called green stone belt .

Kwekwe, the name is derived from the croaking of frogs on the banks of the Kwekwe River, has 100,900 inhabitants (2012 census) and is the seventh largest city in Zimbabwe. The city is located in the Gweru district in the Midlands on the road and railway line from Gweru to Harare . There is a 1000 m runway in Kwekwe-Ost. There are schools of all kinds, but no secondary training institutes.

Kwekwe is politically exposed. Under the dictatorship of Robert Mugabe , the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) controlled gold mining and put pressure on the industry to recruit more blacks in management positions. Unemployment is considered high compared to the opportunities under free development. The political parties Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and ZANU regularly clash here.
