Midlands is one of three provinces in Zimbabwe that do not have a share of the state's external border (along with Bulawayo Province and Harare Province ).
Its area covers 49,166 km² and a population of around 1.6 million (2012). The capital of the province is Gweru , the third largest city in the country. As the central province of Zimbabwe, the population here is made up of numerous ethnic groups: Shona , Ndebele , Tswana , Suthu and Chewa .
The most productive part of the ore-rich Great Dyke runs through the Midlands . Kwekwe is probably the city with the richest mining, manufacturing and chemical industries.
