Kariba

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kariba is a town in the province of Mashonaland West in Zimbabwe . It is located near the large Kariba dam at the north-western end of Lake Kariba, in the middle of which (valley path) the border with Zambia runs. The place Kariba was created from 1955 together with the construction of the dam. Mainly the people involved in the dam project lived here. According to the 2012 census, Kariba had a population of 27,000. There are three separate parts of the settlement: Mahombekombe, Nyamhunga and Heights. The center of local government is in the Old Administration Block in Heights.

Kariba is the center of Zimbabwean tourism in the area around Lake Kariba and, with its tourism infrastructure, offers visitors numerous accommodations, two casinos and restaurants. A little off the beaten track, on the lakeshore, there is a crocodile farm. Another important employer is the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), the local hydropower plant operator.

tourism

Tourism is an important source of income for the place. To explore the reservoir and the surrounding area, where numerous national parks are located, tours, rental boats and guided tours are offered. Other typical tourist destinations are the Victoria Falls , declared a World Heritage Site , and the Hwange National Park . One of the ways to get to Kariba is via Kariba Airport to the east of the town .

The economic profitability of tourism companies is among the highest in Zimbabwe. Nevertheless, people on the outskirts of the village live in deep poverty. For the Kariba Lake, an ambitiously planned hydropower plant and a later valuable tourist destination, part of the ancestral population had to give up their houses, the natural and created heritage, their religious places, their livelihood and the graves of their ancestors in order to get out of the now to give way to flooded areas. The contradiction that has built up here between a few beneficiaries and the rural population, who is largely disconnected from this development, is publicly and controversially discussed in Zimbabwe.
