Bolikhamsai (also Bolikhamxay , Bolikhamxai , Bolikhamsay , Borikhamxay , or Borikhamxai ; Lao ແຂວງ ບໍ ລິ ຄໍາ ໄຊ , ALA-LC : Bǭlikhamsai ) is a province in the middle of Laos . It borders Thailand to the west and Vietnam to the east .

The province was formed in 1983 from parts of the provinces of Vientiane and Khammuan . It borders in the north on the province of Xieng Khouang , in the east on the Vietnamese provinces of Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh , in the south on the province of Khammuan and the Thai provinces of Nakhon Phanom , Bueng Kan and Nong Khai and in the west on the province of Saysomboun and the prefecture Vientiane . Bolikhamsai is traversed by the Nam Kading River, which flows into the Mekong at Pak Kading . The largest limestone landscape in Southeast Asia lies in the Khamkuet district . There are several National Biodiversity Conservation Areas in the province: Phou Khao Khouay in the west, Nam Kading in the center and Nakai-Nam Theun in the southeast of the province.

Bolikhamsai is one of the most sparsely populated provinces in Laos with 14 inhabitants per km². 26.3% of the population live in cities, while 16.0% live in villages with no road access.

In the south-east of the province there is a dam with the Nam Theun 2 hydropower plant , which went into operation in 2010 and is Laos' largest hydropower plant to date with a capacity of 1,070 megawatts.
