Bokeo ( Lao ແຂວງ ບໍ່ ແກ້ວ ) is a province in northwest Laos in the Golden Triangle . It borders Thailand and Myanmar .
The capital and largest city in the province is called Houayxay , it is located directly on the Mekong on the border with Thailand. As a border town, Houayxay has a long history of drug smuggling and was also a stopover for US troops during the Lao Civil War in the early 1960s. The province was created in 1983 by spinning off from Luang Namtha Province . In 1992, Paktha and Pha Oudom Districts were separated from Oudomxay Province and transferred to Bokeo. There are 36 municipalities in the province with over 400 locations. With 43 ethnic groups, the Bokeo Province is one of the most diverse in Laos.
The name bokeo means "gemstone mine " and indicates the rich deposits of gemstones and gemstones in the area.
