The Chikulamayembe are a dynasty of chiefs who ruled the Tumbuka in northern Malawi , the Nkhamanga Henga area, before and during the colonial era. Around 1700 immigrants who came from the eastern shore of Lake Malawi (now Tanzania) founded the Chikulamayembe Kingdom. Today they represent the paramount chief (leader of a traditional chieftainship ) of the Tumbuka.

The Tumbuka still know the first Chikulamayembe as Gonapamuhanya . He was also known as Nkhalapamuhanya. He was the father and founder of the Chikulamayembe dynasty and is still celebrated annually with the Gonapamhanya cultural festival, most recently in 2012 in Bolero (Rumphi district).

The pre-colonial Chikulamayembe dynasty existed until the Ngoni, under their leader Mmbelwa, defeated the Chikulamayembe forces in the 1870s. In 1907, however, the Chikulamayembe dynasty was reinstated by missionaries and made part of the British colonial administration. The powers of the Chikulamayembe were expanded. The first colonial Chikulamayembe, Mbawuwo Mgonanjerwa Gondwe , later known as Chilongozi (leader), was installed as Themba la mathemba , chief chief for the whole of Tumbukaland.

Mbawuwo Gondwe's successor was John Hardy Gondwe , also known as Ziwange (1932–1977). Walter Gondwe has been Chikulamayembe since 1977 .
