Description and history

The so-called old town breakthrough

The demolished blacksmith's guild house was the guild's meeting room as early as 1400 . In 1581 there was a fire. The three-storey house was renovated the following year and one story increased. The east gable as well as the north side had a fresco completely renewed in 1934 by Franz Weiß . It showed knights with imperial coats of arms , a city coat of arms and a coat of arms of the blacksmiths' guild . The original paintings are from 1582 and were badly weathered.

There was a beam and board ceiling in the basement. The first floor had a wooden ceiling. The vestibule on the first floor had a wooden coffered ceiling and a turned parapet against the stairs. Remains of rocail painting could be seen above wooden beams , the lower beams were provided with sayings and bore the year 1768. In the northeast corner there was a later subdivided hall with arched windows from the inside . There were roccile cartridges in their throats . Remnants of pilasters completed the interior.

Despite its protection status, the blacksmith's guild house was demolished in 1971 in the course of the so-called old town renovation , a nationwide urban planning pilot project, and due to alleged dilapidation and replaced by a modern, historicizing new concrete building. This so-called old town breakthrough enabled the pedestrian zone to be created in Fischerstrasse . When the breakthrough occurred, the neighboring Gasthaus zum Kreuz was also demolished. The new building has an arcade along the newly created Kronenstrasse.

Originally only a narrow passage with a gate opening was planned at this point; the idea for a wide street came later.
