The Fischerstraße in Kempten (Allgäu) is the first developed pedestrian zone in Swabia . The shopping mile in Kempten is characterized by retail stores . The Fischerstraße is named after the Iller fishermen who used to live there.

location

The Fischerstrasse, formerly also known as Fischergasse , is located in the imperial part of Kemptens. Starting at the Fischertor , which was demolished in 1866 and is now the artist's house and jeweler Ade , the 290 meter long Fischerstraße runs to the Klostersteige.

history

Fischerstrasse was a main street in the imperial city of Kempten. Even after secularization , it did not lose its importance. In order to cope with the flow of traffic between the old train station and the abbot's residence , which served as the palace barracks for the Bavarian military, the Fischertor was demolished in 1866. Furthermore, in 1910 a narrow point to the Klostersteige was removed by demolishing several houses.

In September 1970 the Fischerstrasse was opened as the first developed pedestrian zone in Bavarian Swabia. The conversion of the road, which had previously been used for through traffic, was only possible through the opening in the old town at the town hall . Since then, the Kronenstrasse there has served through traffic from south to north through the old town.

The founder of Feneberg Lebensmittel Theodor Feneberg (1907–1978), who opened his first self-service grocery store on Fischerstrasse, donated a fountain dedicated to the former Mayor August Fischer .

Since July 23, 1976, another fountain has graced Fischerstrasse. The "Fischerbüble" in the Fischerbrunnen was donated by a Kemptnerin as a souvenir for her deceased husband, a passionate local angler. The figure was created by the Oberstaufen sculptor Fidelis Bentele.

In 1999 and 2000 Fischerstrasse was modernized: In addition to new flooring, new seating was set up, trees were planted and the glass exhibition boxes were removed.

Development

The old street scene on Fischerstraße is largely disrupted by shop fittings and facades from the 19th and 20th centuries. Aside from the heaped houses standing on the eaves , few, for example the Schlössle , have volute gables . Exceptions are houses with a gable roof .

In the south is the Quelle house , built in 1965 , which has been rented by the drugstore and retail chain Müller since 2012 after renovations . The Quelle building replaced the German Emperor's inn

The former brewery of the brewery for the city of Hamburg dates from the 18th century. The two similar and combined buildings are elongated eaves side buildings with dwarf houses with volute gables and classicist details . A wrought-iron bracket from brewery times is striking .

The former building of the Bayerische Vereinsbank is a neo-baroque mansard roof building with three storeys, gabled corner projections , gabled central section and house integrations from around 1910.
