The Feneberg Lebensmittel GmbH is a German grocery chain with headquarters in Kempten (Allgäu) . It operates regionally in the Allgäu , Upper Swabia , Upper Bavaria and in the Austrian Kleinwalsertal .

history

Company founder Theodor Feneberg ran a cheese wholesaler that he took over from his father. In 1933 he bought a grocery store on Zwingerstrasse in Kempten. Three years later, a confectionery shop was also opened on Bahnhofstrasse. The Feneberg Lebensmittel GmbH was founded in 1947 by him and entered in the commercial register. It has been run by the Feneberg family ever since. The cheese wholesale business was given up in 1950 in order to build up a network of branches. In 1955 a branch in Fischerstrasse was greatly expanded. According to the company, the first supermarket in Swabia was built here. Its own meat and sausage products were added to the range in 1959 when the company took over a butcher's shop in Kempten. In 1969 the Kaufmarkt department store opens on the outskirts of Kempten with around 7,000 m² of retail space.

Over the years, Feneberg took over a number of companies such as Philipp Reiter GmbH , the Landbäckerei Durach and the Bäckerei Sinz , which has now been merged under the name Feneberg Bäckerei , as well as the butchery Bühler , which previously produced organic goods for the Feneberg butchery. In 2012, shares in the butcher Dietz were added .

In 2019 Feneberg operated 76 branches. The hypermarkets operate under the name Kaufmarkt and also have a large selection of textiles, toys, housewares and other items. In addition, Feneberg operates its own central butcher's and bakery and sells several own brands. The VonHier brand is particularly emphasized for products from regional, controlled organic cultivation or production (since 1998). VonHier products are manufactured by over 600 contractual partners within 100 kilometers of the company headquarters in Kempten. Since autumn 2008 attempts have been made to replace Alnatura's range of inexpensive organic products with its own brand FeBio (organic products beyond the 100-kilometer limit) . In addition, self-service restaurants are operated under the name Die Küche .

The Feneberg Lebensmittel GmbH is a manufacturer of convenience foods . These products are sold in retail outlets under the brand name Gourmella and in the Philipp Reiter GmbH branches (here under the name Reiter Bonvenience ). The wholesale market sales are handled by Philipp Reiter GmbH .

Feneberg was also active in the online grocery trade. At the end of July 2017, Feneberg launched Germany's first supermarket on Amazon Prime Now with a one-hour delivery time. The online branch of Feneberg also included the food startup Freshfoods, which was founded in 2012 and is a wholly owned subsidiary called “Freshfoods by Feneberg”. Freshfoods was discontinued at the end of October 2018. Since then, the products have been sold through Bringmeister . In the future, the company plans not to re-enter the online business.

In 2019, the company ran into economic difficulties due to high pension provisions and large investments. A rehabilitation concept was then worked out for four years. Among other things, internal company services are to be outsourced. Job cuts are also planned.
