Louis Trichardt (formerly Trichardtsdorp , for a short time also Makhado like the municipality to which Louis Trichardt belongs) is a city in South Africa .

geography

Louis Trichardt is one of the largest cities in Limpopo Province . The city is located near the border with Zimbabwe at the foot of the Soutpansberg Mountains. Fruits such as bananas , mangoes and nuts are grown in the area . The national road N1 runs through Louis Trichardt. In 2011 the city had 25,360 inhabitants.

history

Like many other cities in South Africa, Louis Trichardt was created through the Voortrekker settlement. Two expeditions of the Voortrekker reached the Soutpansberg Mountains in 1836, one of them under the leadership of Louis Trichardt (actually Louis Tregardt, born in Oudtshoorn , Cape Colony , 1783-1838), after whom the town was named, and the other under the leadership by Hans van Rensburg. Van Rensburg then decided to lead his group further east in the direction of Lourenço Marques (now Maputo , Mozambique ). However, the entire group was killed on the way there.

Trichardt and his followers, however, stayed near the mountains and pitched their tents there, at the point that probably corresponds to the current location of the city. They also grew grain there. After the settlers had stayed there for a year, they decided to follow van Rensburg and his group. On the way to Lourenço Marques, which lasted seven months, many members fell ill with malaria , including Trichardt himself, who died in Lourenço Marques.
