Tukuyu ( Neu-Langenburg during the German colonial period ) is a small town in Tanzania , about 50 km south of the city of Mbeya .

geography

The place is located at an altitude of about 1,500 m in the Rungwe district in southeastern Tanzania. It is located about 45 km from Lake Malawi , but at the same time about 1,000 m above lake level. Often the wind blows up from the lake, so it is often humid, cool and windy. The annual precipitation is around 2,500 mm.

The local language is Nyakyusa , the national language Swahili is also spoken. The population are Nyakyusa (also Konde). The place is in Tanzania u. a. known from the football club Tukuyu Stars .

history

The city was founded as a German colonial town of Neu-Langenburg, named after the original Langenburg on the shores of Lake Njassa , which had to be abandoned because of the rising water level. The official headquarters of the Langenburg district had been at the new location since 1901 . The place had a post office and ten shops. A heliograph connection ensured a quick connection with other parts of the colony . The 5th Company of the Schutztruppe for German East Africa was stationed in Masoko , about 14 kilometers southeast of Neu-Langenburg . The buildings of the original German boma and the name of the Hotel Langbossi are a reminder of the past .

Infrastructure

The national institute for medical research has an important medical research station here and there is a small Lutheran hospital. There are several schools, e.g. B. the Kipande School and the Ndembela Secondary School and some other small educational institutions. The city is the headquarters of the Konde Diocese, the influential Lutheran Church in Tanzania . There is a post office. The area has many commercial tea plantations , some coffee cultivation, and there is intensive use of the well-watered, productive volcanic soil by smallholders.
