Masoko

Masoko (old spelling: Massoko ) in the Rungwe district is a place in southwestern Tanzania with a population of around 8,000. Masoko is 14 kilometers southeast of Tukuyu on the way to Lake Nyassa and is right next to the circular crater lake of the same name. The place name means "market".

The place still has parts of the former German boma in the center. Masoko was the location of the 5th Company of the Schutztruppe for German East Africa during the German colonial times .

When the Germans evacuated the site in 1917, large amounts of material were sunk in the lake. For years, children have been collecting lighter coins from the lake and selling them to tourists.
