Pierre Maurice (born November 13, 1868 in Allaman ; † December 25, 1936 there ) was a Swiss composer .

Life

Maurice attended the Collège in Geneva and had his first music lessons there with Hugo von Senger . In Stuttgart he studied harmony with Percy Goetschius , after which he trained as a banker in Geneva, but also studied at the Geneva Conservatory with Émile Jaques-Dalcroze . In 1891 he went to Paris , where he studied at the Conservatoire with Albert Lavignac , André Gedalge , Jules Massenet and Gabriel Fauré . In 1899 he presented his thesis there with the oratorio La Fille de Jephté .

In 1900 Maurice moved to Munich , where a large part of his works were created. During the First World War he was appointed field commandant in Munich. In 1917 he returned to his birthplace, where he spent the rest of his life as a composer. He also held positions in numerous music organizations and commissions in Switzerland. He was married and had three children.

In addition to several operas, orchestral and choral works, Maurice created numerous songs and a few chamber music compositions. He was an ardent Wagnerian all his life. "His personal style, which does not show his Swiss origin, can be seen as an excellent survival strategy in view of the extreme currents of his time."
