Karl Costa, 1900

Karl Costa , actually Karl Kostia (born February 2, 1832 in Vienna ; † October 11, 1907 there ) was an Austrian civil servant, folk poet and librettist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Josefstadt and studying philosophy, Costa was a civil servant at the Lottery Directorate in Prague for 20 years and from 1879 to 1891 editor of the satirical and political magazine Komische Briefe des Hans-Jörgels von Gumpoldskirchen . Between 1882 and 1885 he headed the theater in der Josefstadt . He wrote libretti for Franz von Suppè , Johann Brandl (1835–1913), Anton M. Storch and Ivan Zajc , among others , as well as numerous folk plays, antics and parodies.

Costa had already reached the age of 60 when he had his greatest success with Brother Martin , a folk piece with singing. The play was played over 200 times at the Raimund Theater . Before and after this success, he was plagued by suffering, serious illnesses and material hardship, and only an annual honorary gift granted by the City of Vienna enabled him to last carefree years. During this time he still wrote Fools of Luck and the portrait of Franz Schubert , the first time it was performed in the Raimund Theater , the author was honored with an ovation.

Costa, the last Viennese folk poet , spent the last years of his life physically weakened in his work chair, which he never left to sleep because asthma made it impossible for him to use a bed. Fourteen days before his death, the writer took a cold water cure at Hartenstein Castle , the intolerance of which made the return trip to his apartment ( Roter Hof  6, Vienna-Josefstadt ) necessary.

A grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery is dedicated to Karl Costa (Group 0, Row 1, No. 68). In 1912 the Costagasse in Vienna Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus (15th district of Vienna) was named after him.

His son Martin Costa (1895–1974) was also active as a writer; a second son, Felix Kostia-Costa (1887–1942), was the publishing director of Paul-Zsolnay-Verlag ; the daughter Klara was 15 years old when her father died. The descendants came from the second marriage to the actress Rosa Goldstern (1862–1916), who came from Frankfurt and was 30 years his junior, whom Costa had met during his time as the Josefstadt theater director.
