City and Country (Polka)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stadt und Land is a polka mazur by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 322). The work was performed for the first time on January 19, 1868 in the Flower Hall in Vienna.

Remarks

The polka was written at the end of 1867 after the composer returned from a guest performance in London . At that time he also acquired a villa (which is now known as the Fledermausvilla because a few years later he composed the operetta of the same name there) in Hietzing, which was still rural at the time . In the Polka City and Country , he musically describes the contrast between city and country life at the time. The first performance took place on January 19, 1868 as part of a promenade concert in the flower rooms of the Vienna Horticultural Society. The work, in the Austrian-Viennese style, was well received by the audience. In 1899, Adolf Müller used parts of this work in the operetta Wiener Blut , which he composed based on motifs by Johann Strauss (son) .

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 4 minutes and 8 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
