Gabriel Montoya

Gabriel Montoya (born October 20, 1868 in Alès , † October 7, 1914 ) was a French lyric poet and chansonnier.

The son of a pharmacist studied medicine in Lyon and received his doctorate. med. and after a trip to the Antilles he settled in Paris in 1893, where he enrolled at the university in 1899. As an avid amateur singer, he performed at night in cafes, where he caught the eye of Rodolphe Salis , who hired him to Le Chat Noir . In 1902 he made a guest appearance in Berlin with the company Monmartre en ballade , led by Yvette Guilbert .

In Paris he became a well-known chansonnier with songs he had written and set to music. His texts have also been set to music by composers such as Paul Paray , Gaston Maquis , Yann Nibor , Marie Krysinda and Edmond Missa . He also wrote numerous plays that were never performed.

After the closure of Chat Noir, he became head of Quat'z-arts in 1910 . In 1914 he was killed in a bicycle accident near Castres .
