Edmond Missa
Edmond Jean Louis Missa (born June 12, 1861 in Reims , † January 29, 1910 in Paris ) was a French composer.
Life
Missa had first lessons from his mother, the singer Marie-Louise Duval , who later became a professor of singing at the Paris Conservatory . His cousin, the Abbé Louis Duval, was the organist of the great organ in Reims Cathedral, his uncle, the music professor Ernest Duval, was the organist of the Saint-Jacques church . At the age of ten, Missa succeeded Henri Dallier as organist on the choir organ of Reims Cathedral.
In Paris Missa attended Louis Niedermeyer's school , where Clément Loret taught organ, Eugène gigout , harmony, counterpoint and piano and Gustave Lefèvre taught composition. He then moved to the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied piano with Antoine François Marmontel , harmony with Jules Duprato and composition with Jules Massenet . At the same time he became organist at the church of St-Louis-en-l'Île in 1878 . He later held positions as organist at the churches of St-Roch , St-Honoré-d'Eylau , St-Thomas-d'Aquin and, from 1885 until his death, at Notre-Dame-des-Blancs-Manteaux .
From 1880 Missa competed for the Prix de Rome five times , but only won an honorable mention in 1881 with the cantata Geneviève de Paris . In 1886 he received the Prix Cressent for the opera Juge et partie , which was performed several times at the Opéra-Comique .
Missa, who has been composing since he was sixteen, has published numerous piano and organ works, including easy pieces for children, songs, choral works and orchestral pieces as well as around thirty operas and several ballets.
