Franz Xaver Schnyder from Wartensee
Franz Xaver Peter Joseph Schnyder von Wartensee (born April 18, 1786 in Lucerne ; † August 27, 1868 in Frankfurt am Main , North German Confederation ) was a Swiss composer and music author from the Lucerne patrician family Schnyder von Wartensee .
Life
After working for some time in a finance office in Lucerne, he devoted himself entirely to music from 1810 and initially studied it in Zurich . In December 1811 he came to Vienna and found another teacher in the conductor Johann Christoph Kienlen (1783–1829). Originally he wanted to become a pupil of Ludwig van Beethoven , who at that time, however, was basically no longer teaching - with the exception of Archduke Rudolph of Austria . Nevertheless, Schnyder met Beethoven several times and left extensive memories of the composer in which he unadornedly describes the contradictory, very changeable nature of the composer. Schnyder spent part of the summer of 1812 in Baden near Vienna , where he lost all of his possessions, including numerous manuscripts, in the serious fire accident that destroyed parts of the city on July 26th.
After taking part in the campaign against the French in 1815, he got a job at Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi's educational institution in Yverdon , but moved to Frankfurt am Main as early as 1817 and lived and worked there with short interruptions until his death.
In 1847, Schnyder founded the “Schnyder von Wartensee Foundation” to promote artistic and scientific work, which is now administered by the Zurich Central Library .
plant
Of his compositions, which are distinguished by a wealth of melodies, clarity and correctness, the opera Fortunat , the oratorio Time and Eternity as well as numerous cantatas and songs with a cheerful and serious content should be mentioned, e.g. B. settings by Johann Martin Miller , Ludwig Uhland or Johann Nikolaus Götz . After his death his poems (Leipzig 1869) and memoirs (Zurich 1888) appeared.
