Schnyder von Wartensee is a Swiss patrician family from Sursee and Lucerne .

history

According to family tradition, the progenitor of the family is probably Werner Sartor, mentioned in Sursee's yearbook in 1350. The family gained reputation and wealth in the 15th and 16th centuries, primarily through running the Zur Sonne inn in Sursee, through the cloth trade and mercenary services . The family played a leading role in Sursee and provided 23 mayors there from the 15th to the 18th century . Numerous family members held the lucrative conductorships of the St. Urban and Muri monasteries .

Jörg Schnyder von Wartensee acquired Lucerne citizenship in 1492 and the family rose to the Lucerne patriciate and also belonged to the marriage circle of the Lucerne small councilors. Jost Franz Anton was elected to the Lucerne Grand Council in 1705 and to the Small Council in 1712 , where the family remained represented until 1798. Several members of the family held political offices in the 19th century.

From 1457 to 1547 the rule of Mauensee was owned by the family and from 1647 to around 1833 also Schloss and Gut Wartensee in the community of Neuenkirch . The family named themselves after this estate from 1649. Since 1955, the family has also owned Tannenfels Castle in the Nottwil community .
