Julius Schnyder von Wartensee (born February 9, 1830 in Sursee ; † December 28, 1913 in Lucerne ; resident in Sursee and Lucerne) was a Swiss farmer, lawyer, bank clerk and politician.

Life

Julius - also called Jules - was the son of Ludwig Schnyder, asset manager of the St. Urban monastery and owner of the Kurhaus Menzberg , and Josefa geb. Beck. He grew up in Sursee and also attended school there. Later Julius Schnyder moved from Wartensee to the grammar school in Lucerne. He then began studying law and political science in Munich, which he successfully completed in 1850. He completed his educational career by attending lectures in Paris. After completing his studies, Julius Schnyder von Wartensee first worked as a lawyer. He then switched to finance and became an employee of the Lucerne bank Sebastian Crivelli & Comp.

At the same time he was a landowner in Menzberg .

Political career

Like many members of the Schnyder von Wartensee family , he got into politics. He was first orphan bailiff from 1851 to 1863 and was also a member of the local citizens' council in Sursee. He gave up membership in both bodies in 1863 when he was elected mayor of Sursee. He held this office until 1871. At the age of 27 he became a conservative member of the Grand Council , of which he was a member from 1857 to 1871 and again from 1891 to 1895. Membership in the cantonal parliament ended in 1871 when he was elected to the government council of the canton of Lucerne as a representative of the conservatives . In this he was first Minister of State, then Minister of Finance. In 1873 Julius Schnyder von Wartensee was Schultheiss (President of the Government Council). He remained a member of the Lucerne executive for twenty years.

His political career at the national level, however, was quite short. In the years 1885/1886 he was a member of the Council of States as a representative of the Canton of Lucerne .

As Minister of State, he was the founder of the Rathausen reform home and its sponsor, President of the Board of Directors of the Vierwaldstättersee Steamship Company (DGV) and Board of Directors of the Centralbahn and the Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn .

Private

Julius Schnyder von Wartensee was married to Eugenia Crivelli (1839–1920), daughter of the Lucerne banker Carl Crivelli and Josefine Meyer von Schauensee. They had four children together. Militarily he held the rank of captain in the Swiss army.
