Franz Brendel
Karl Franz Brendel (born November 26, 1811 in Stolberg , † November 25, 1868 in Leipzig ) was a German music critic and musicologist . He was the son of the Saxon machine director Christian Friedrich Brendel .
Live and act
In 1844, Brendel took over the editing of the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik in Leipzig as the successor to Robert Schumann . Under his leadership, the journal quickly developed into the mouthpiece of the u. a. Music conception represented by Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner , for whose advocates Brendel introduced the term New German School into music history. He published numerous writings by the New Germans in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik , including 1850 Wagner's infamous article Das Judenthum in der Musik . Brendel was in charge of the magazine, which at that time was in constant dispute with opponents of the future music (especially Eduard Hanslick ), until his death in 1868.
Apart from his journalistic activities, Brendel also gave lectures on music history at the Leipzig Conservatory for a while , which were particularly attended by progressive-minded young musicians such as Felix Draeseke .
He married the pianist Elisabeth (Lysinka) Tautmann (1818–1866) in Dresden in 1844 .
