Opera
- January 5th : The premiere of the opera Braniboři v Čechách ( The Brandenburgers in Bohemia ) by Bedřich Smetana takes place at the České Prozatímní Divadlo in Prague . The text is by Karel Sabina based on a historical novel by Josef Kajetán Tyl . With this work, the composer wins a competition for the first national opera. After initial great success, however, the work cannot keep on stage in the long term.
- May 27th : The world premiere of the opera Astorga by Johann Joseph Abert takes place in Stuttgart.
- May 30th : The comic opera Prodaná nevěsta ( The Bartered Bride ) by Bedřich Smetana based on a libretto by Karel Sabina premieres at the České Prozatímní Divadlo in Prague.
- November 17th : The opera Mignon by Ambroise Thomas is successfully premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. The libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré is based on a small part from the novel Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .

- February 5 : On the Paris Théâtre des Variétés is Jacques Offenbach's operetta Barbe-Bleue ( Bluebeard premiered). The libretto is by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy .
- March 21 : Franz von Suppé's operetta Leichte Kavallerie with Karl Costa's libretto is premiered at the Carltheater in Vienna . Today she is only known for her world-famous overture .
- October 31 : At the Théâtre du Palais-Royal in Paris, the operetta Parisian life of Jacques Offenbach premiered, which is one of his most successful works. This libretto is also by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy .
Other works
- August 4th : The work Cantique de Jean Racine , for which Gabriel Fauré won first prize in a composition competition last year, is premiered in a version with strings and organ for the inauguration of the organ in the Abbey of Saint-Sauveur in Montivilliers. The composer sits at the organ himself.

- May 22 : William Steinway , Managing Director of Steinway & Sons , has the Steinway Hall built on 14th Street in Manhattan, modeled on the Parisian company-owned concert halls . The foundation stone will be laid four days after the New York Academy of Music at the same location burned down to the ground.
- July 3 : After the victory of Prussian troops in the battle of Königgrätz over Austria's army, the military musician Johann Gottfried Piefke supposedly composes the Königgrätzer March on the battlefield .
