The Große Seeschleuse in Emden is a lock in the port of Emden in the Port Arthur / Transvaal district . It connects the Emden inland port with the Emden outer port and thus also with the Ems . Niedersachsen Ports GmbH, founded by the State of Lower Saxony , is responsible for operation and maintenance .
The lock
The lock was built between 1907 and 1913. With the construction, a new port basin was created, the New Inland Port . After the Nesserland lock (built in 1888), it is the second seaward lock in the port of Emden. Its usable length is 260 meters and it is 40 meters wide. The jamb depth of the sea lock is SKN −9.76 meters today ; this corresponds to a sea level of −11.96 meters
With a length of 260 meters, it was considered one of the largest sea locks of its kind in the world for some time after its completion in 1913.
The large sea lock is primarily used for shipping . Due to the new construction of the Nesserlander lock , which was closed from 2006, it was also used for inland navigation and sport shipping until April 16, 2018 . As a result, more ships than usual were locked with the help of the Great Sea Lock . On average (2012) around 6000 smugglers are carried out per year.
In the 1990s, the lock was renovated. a. the lock gates were replaced. The floating sliding gates have a clear width of 42 meters, are 20 meters high and 7 meters wide. Their weight is 860 tons. During locks, the gates slide on runners.
The outer and inner head of the lock are passable for vehicles up to 2.00 meters wide and a total weight of up to 7.5 tons. Large vehicles have to bypass the port.
The service life predicted when the Great Sea Lock was built was estimated to be around 100 years. As a result of extensive adjustments and renovations, including a greatly increased number of locks, it is assumed that the Great Sea Lock will be operational for another 20 years. Studies on the Great Sea Lock should show whether a new or reconstruction of the lock is necessary.
