The Nesserlander Schleuse is a lock from the Tidenems to the Emden inland port and the Ems-Jade Canal . It is located in the Port Arthur / Transvaal district of Emden .
history
The Nesserland lock was opened on June 5, 1888, in the three emperor year . It replaced a lock sluice built in 1845 , through which a lot of silt got into the harbor with every high tide . The new chamber lock made the Emden inland port independent of the tide and at the same time reduced the amount of silt.
After more than 100 years of operation, at the turn of the millennium, considerations were made as to which construction measures could be used to extend the service life of the lock. Protection against storm surges played an important role. Due to the commissioning of the Ems barrier , higher water levels were expected in Emden, which was confirmed on November 1st, 2006 by the storm "Britta".
In mid-2007, Niedersachsen Ports , as the successor to the Emden Port Authority, presented a "major solution" estimated at 44 million euros. After a few conflicts and an incorrect tender, the estimated costs rose to 68 million euros and the term “Ostfriesische Emsphilharmonie” came up. On May 20, 2009, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economics, Labor and Transport approved a second tender.
After the Nesserland lock had been out of operation for five years, the pile foundation finally began in the summer of 2011 . In the further course it turned out that the old building fabric could not be integrated. In addition, culverts in the harbor area caused further delays. When protecting the culverts, an artesian spring was also encountered and construction had to be continued under water. These additional measures put the costs in April 2014 at a total of 120 million euros.
On October 18, 2016, the first lock gates could be inserted into the new outer head. The work was completed on schedule, the first lock took place on December 22, 2017. The entire construction work will be completed in 2018. Regular operations will start on April 16, 2018.
bridge
Since the usable width of the Nesserland lock was expanded to 18 meters by the new construction, the bridge also had to be adapted. The lifting gear of the new bascule bridge consists of two 14.5 m high pylons with corresponding balance beams, which can lift the 120 t bridge flap during a lock.
