Leonid Arsenijowytsch Bulachowskyj (born March 2 . Jul / 14. March  1888 greg. In Kharkov , Kharkov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 4. April 1961 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian - Soviet linguist and philologist .

Life

Leonid Bulachowskyj was born in Kharkov as the son of a master mechanic. There he attended the 3rd Kharkov School until 1926 and then studied until 1910 at the historical-philological faculty of the University of Kharkov . From 1917 to 1921 he was professor at the University in Perm , thereafter from 1921 to 1942 at the University of Kharkov. Between 1944 and 1960 he was professor and head of the department of Slavic Philology at the University of Kiev , and from 1944 until his death he headed the Institute of Linguistics named after OO Potebnja in Kiev.

In 1939 Bulachowskyj became an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR , and in 1946 he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . He wrote over 400 academic papers written on Russian and Ukrainian linguistics and Slavic studies.

Bulachowskyj died at the age of 72 in Kiev and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .
