Ladies donation (polka)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Damenspende is a polka -française by Johann Strauss II (op. 305). The work was performed for the first time on February 6, 1866 in the Redouten Hall of the Vienna Hofburg .

Remarks

The polka was written in Mardi Gras in 1866 for the student ball in the Vienna Hofburg and premiered there. The title name recalls the dedication of the work to the ladies of the organizing committee of this ball. The Carnival of 1866 was not as atmospheric in Vienna as in previous years. This was due to the political situation at the time and the increasing danger of war with Prussia. The success of this polka also suffered from this. The work was only gradually able to establish itself and to remain in the Strauss Chapel's repertoire for a longer period of time.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 44 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
