The Steinway & Sons company produces its first grand piano . |
Events
- February 1 : The chamber musician Tröstler founds a private conservatory in Dresden , from which the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music emerges.
- In New York City the company developed to the south of Manhattan in a small workshop Steinway & Sons , the first two grand pianos with the production numbers 791 and 792. They are still just strung. The Steinway D-274 concert grand, which is now on the world's stages with over 25,000 pieces, is derived in three stages of development from these two very first New York concert grand pianos.
Instrumental and vocal music (selection)
- The Polish composer Tekla Bądarzewska published the salon piece Prayer of a Virgin in Warsaw - probably the most successful published piano piece ever.
- Camille Saint-Saëns composes the symphony in F major , nicknamed Urbs Roma . With her he won first prize in a composition competition of the Société Sainte-Cécile in Bordeaux. He does not receive the Prix de Rome , for which he actually wrote the symphony. The premiere takes place in 1857 .
- The Welsh harpist James James composes the melody for Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau , the later national anthem of Wales . The test comes from his father, Evan James.
- Ernst Pauer composes his 1st symphony in C minor .
- Heinrich Marschner writes the drama music for The Goldsmith of Ulm .
- Franz Lachner composes the piece 3 songs without words for harp
- In February the Four Ballads op. 10 by Johannes Brahms, completed in 1854, appear in print for the first time.
- Mili Alexejewitsch Balakirew composes his Piano Concerto No. 1 in F sharp minor, Op. 1.
- Antonín Dvořák brings out one of his first works with the piano work Vergißmeinnicht-Polka .
Musical theater
- January 18 : The one-act opera Falstaff by Adolphe Adam premieres in Paris (Théâtre-Lyrique). The libretto is by Adolphe de Leuven and Jules Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges.
- January 23rd : The ballet Le Corsaire by Adolphe Adam premieres at the Paris Opera.
- February 23 : The Opéra-comique Manon Lescaut by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber with the libretto by Eugène Scribe has its world premiere in the Salle Favart of the Opéra-Comique in Paris. Although the first performance of the setting of the novel of the same name by Antoine-François Prévost from 1731 was well received and the opera was performed 63 times, it cannot remain in the repertoire in the long term.
- March 23 : Mam'zelle Geneviève , a two-act opera by Adolphe Adam , is performed for the first time in Paris (Théâtre-Lyrique). The libretto is by Arthur de Beauplan and Léon Lévy Brunswick.
- April 29th : Adolphe Adam's last opera Les pantins de Violette with a libretto by Léon Battu is performed for the first time in Paris, (Bouffes-Parisiens). The composer dies a few days later on May 3rd. Another opera he created, entitled Le dernier bal , will not have its world premiere.
- May 16 : Russalka , an opera in four acts and six pictures by Alexander Dargomyschski , who also wrote the libretto, is premiered at the circus theater in Saint Petersburg. It is based on the poem The Mermaid by Alexander Pushkin , published in 1837 . Initially, the work received little attention.
- September 19 : The opera Les dragons de Villars (German: The Bell of the Hermit ) by Aimé Maillart , based on a libretto by Eugène Lockroy and Eugène Cormon, premieres at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris.

- Jacques Fromental Halévy's opera Valentine d'Aubigny will be premiered.
- The two-act opera A Day in Russia by Heinrich Dorn , with a text by Johann Christoph Grünbaum (based on Eugène Scribe), will be premiered in Berlin.
- François Bazin composes the opera Maître Pathelin
- Friedrich von Flotow presented his opera Albin or The Foster Son to the public for the first time in Vienna.
- Emilio Arrieta composes the two zarzuelas La hija de la Providencia and El sonámbulo .
- Jacques Offenbach publishes the operetta Le 66 (German adaptation as Die Zwei Savojarden ) and the opéra bouffe Le Financier et le savetier (The cobbler and the millionaire) .

- Johann Strauss (son) : The composer brought out the following works in 1856: Heightened Pulse (Waltz) op 175; Jurists Ball Dances (Waltz) op 177; Farewell Calls (Waltz) op 179; Dragonfly Waltz op 180; Grand Duchess Alexandra (waltz) op 181; Coronation Songs (Waltz) op 184; Poor Ball Polka op 176; Sans-souci-Polka op 178; L'Inconnue-Polka op 182; Coronation March op 183 and the Strelna Terrace Quadrille op 18.
