James James , pseudonym Iago ap Ieuan (* 1833 in Argoed , Bedwellty , † January 11, 1902 in Aberdare , Cynon Valley ) was a Welsh harpist from Pontypridd . He composed the Welsh national anthem Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (English: Land of my Fathers ).

Life

James was born on November 4, 1832 in the Ancient Druid public house in Argoed in Bedwellty parish , Monmouthshire , to Evan James (1809-1878) and Elizabeth Stradling of Caerphilly. His father, who worked as a poet under the pseudonym leuan ab lago , moved the family to Pontypridd in 1844 , where he worked as a weaver and wool merchant. His son later also worked for the company.

James James composed the melody of the song, later known as Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau , in January 1856. Originally the work was entitled Glan Rhondda (The Banks of the Rhondda), as James was inspired to walk along the banks of the Rhondda River . His father Evan James wrote the text for the later hymn.

A monument to James and Evan James was erected in Ynysangharad Park in Pontypridd to represent the muses of poetry and music. James James died on January 11, 1902 in Aberdare in the Cynon Valley . He is buried in the Aberdare cemetery with his wife Cecilia and daughter Louisa.
